Descrição
Quinta do Pégo is located in the Douro demarcated region in the heart of the area classified as World Heritage by Unesco. According to historical documents the production of wine at Quinta do Pégo can be dated back to 1548. Today, Quinta do Pégo has 33 hectares planted with vines and the soil is A classified, which is the highest classification of the region. The first wine produced under the Quinta do Pégo label was a Vintage Port 2000, which was followed by a 2003 Douro D.O.C. red wine.
The range of wines was further extended by the introduction of 2011, 2012 and 2013 Quinta do Pégo Signature, a blend of red Portuguese varieties, which was highly regarded by wine lovers. As a result of the success of these wines, it was decided to further exploit the potential available at Quinta do Pégo by producing a wine from the older vineyards in 2013 as Quinta do Pégo Vinhas Velhas. This wine was also highly acclaimed by customers for the good maturation potential, smooth and elegant finish and concentrated fruit flavours.
Therefore, in 2014, it was decided to produce a similar blend from the older vineyards. After heavy rains early during the 2014 harvest, the grapes for this wine were only harvested late September, yielding grapes of excellent physical quality, good sugar and acid levels and looking very promising for the final result.
This Quinta do Pégo Vinhas Velhas 2014 is produced by the South African winemaker Wouter Pienaar.
Fermentation was done in the traditional Portuguese method of trampling the grapes by foot in “lagares” to ensure good colour extraction and soft tannins.
The wine was matured in new French oak barrels for 15 months.
This wine has attractive ruby red colour, strong fruit flavours and soft tannins with a well integrated oakiness. All these attributes will ensure good maturation potential.
At this stage, the wine is showing great elegance and freshness.
Quinta do Pégo Vinhas Velhas is produced in very limited amount.
As the wine is only lightly filtered, deposit might occur and therefore decanting is recommended.
We are sure the old vineyard will show its true potential.
Hopefully, you will enjoy this wine or store it for the right occasion!!
