After many years making wine in South Africa, Niel Bester arrived at Quinta do Pégo with a clear ambition: to create wines and Ports that show the strength, elegance and character of the Douro Valley.
His international experience brought rigour, sensitivity and a very personal way of reading each harvest. At Quinta do Pégo, that journey meets the slopes of the Douro, demanding vineyards and the constant search for balance between concentration, freshness and authenticity.

What makes the Douro special?
The intensity of the landscape, the age of the vines and the way each parcel asks the winemaker to listen to the place before making decisions.
What defines a great Port?
Depth, precision and time. A great Port should have immediate presence, but also the ability to reveal new layers as it ages.
What is the most memorable harvest moment?
When the vineyard, the team and the cellar move at the same rhythm. That is when every decision begins to turn grapes into identity.

Wouter Pienaar, an important chapter in the wines’ story
Before Niel Bester arrived, Wouter Pienaar played an important role in the recent history of Quinta do Pégo. Also South African, he brought a technical and sensitive reading of the Douro at an important stage in the development of the estate’s wines and Ports.
His work helped consolidate a sense of continuity: wines with structure, elegance and Douro identity, respecting the origin of the grapes and the distinctive character of Quinta do Pégo’s slopes.
Experience and continuity
Technical knowledge rooted in the Douro
Alongside Niel Bester, Manuel Henrique da Silva represents a deep connection to the Douro and to Port wine. Born in Vila Real and trained in Oenology at UTAD, he has spent decades interpreting Douro and Port wines from a technical perspective.
His experience brings continuity, precision and local context to the work at Quinta do Pégo, keeping the personality of the estate at the centre of every decision.
